Golconda is famed for its diamond mines which yielded gems like the Kohinoor, Blue Hope, and Daria-e-Noor.      Golconda was initially called Mankal and was established by the Kakatiyas (South Indian Dynasty) in 1143. It is said that a shepherd kid discovered an idol of a deity at the location when Kakatiyas were constructing the fort and that is how it came to be called as Golla Konda or Shepherd’s Hill.
